"My mother is 90 and has lived alone since my father passed away in
the 70s. She had always been very independent – shopping and cooking
for herself – but around Christmas time last year, she just wasn’t
herself so I took her to the emergency room. The doctors determined she
was dehydrated and malnourished from not eating well. She ended up
spending two weeks in the hospital, and while they didn’t find anything
else wrong with her, the doctors decided she could no longer live
alone. I live in a tri-level home, and there was no way she could move
in with me. And we didn’t have any other family members who could take
her. I called MPTF before we went to the emergency room that day to
start the ball rolling and find out what my options were. I couldn’t
afford to put her in an assisted living situation, and was worried
there would be no options.
MPTF not only found a great assisted living facility for her, but the
organization is subsidizing part of the cost of her care. These days
she’s eating three full, healthy meals a day. I don’t know what I would
have done without MPTF."
