"Growing up, my father always taught us to take care of ourselves
and that we shouldn’t ask anyone else for money. So it was really my
last resort when I turned to MPTF’s financial assistance program. I was
injured on the job and found myself unable to work due to debilitating
back pain and migraine headaches. I knew it was time to reach out for
help when I saw how my injury and financial situation was affecting my
two boys. The people at MPTF’s financial assistance office immediately
embraced me and never made me feel ashamed or embarrassed about asking
for help. I remember the first time I went shopping at the grocery
store with the coupons provided by MPTF, and I was able to tell my kids
that they didn’t have to go without anymore, and we could go back to
buying some of the things they were used to having before I got
injured. It made me feel proud to be able to provide for them again.
And it made me realize that sometimes people need help, and it’s OK to
ask for assistance. You never think it’s going to happen to you, but
you just don’t know what the future holds. I am so grateful to the Fund
for helping me get back on my feet again."
