"My father was one of the first people in the entertainment business to
realize the importance of community and helping others who are less
fortunate,” said Samuel Goldwyn, Jr., remembering his father and
legendary movie pioneer Samuel Goldwyn. “It could have been because of
his humble beginnings or maybe gratitude for his successes, but my
father was an advocate for taking care of our own even before that
became the mission of the Motion Picture & Television Fund.”
Samuel Goldwyn, Jr., who has become one of Hollywood’s most successful
producers in his own right, is sitting in his spacious yet modest
offices in West Los Angeles recalling how his father encouraged and
supported MPTF co-founder Jean Hersholt with the formation of the
Motion Picture Relief Fund, the precursor to MPTF. “Hersholt told my
father that he, along with Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks, were
going to establish an organization that would provide help to people in
the entertainment industry who were in need,” said Goldwyn, Jr. “Right
from the start my father supported the organization, and would continue
to do so for the rest of his life."
