Volunteer Story

"Every couple weeks, I spend time with one of the residents who suffers from mild dementia. He tells me all kinds of stories – sometimes the same ones, but I don’t mind. He calls me his 'friend with wheels' because I sometimes take him places, like the park. When we go out, he tells me he feels like he’s part of society, and it makes me feel good I can do that for him. I volunteer because I figure life is short, and, unfortunately, many people die alone. I think each of us has a responsibility to do something and make a difference in our own way. Sometimes when I’m on my way to volunteer, I'm in a bad mood for whatever reason. After spending time with the residents, my whole demeanor changes. I know I'm doing something that directly affects another person. I believe in Karma, and I just hope that when I'm older, I’ll have my own 'friend with wheels.'"
