Remembering the Generosity of Ed Limato

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

Ed Limato, a senior agent at WME Entertainment who had spent four decades in the entertainment industry guiding the screen careers of some of its biggest stars has passed away but the memories he created and his fondness of the Industry continues on at the Motion Picture & Television Fund.

The former International Creative Management, Inc. (ICM) President and Vice Chair had originated an idea of an annual barbeque for the Motion Picture & Television Fund residents and brought it to life . Ed was instrumental in bringing together this intergenerational group of Hollywood agents and retirees, not only to mingle, but also as a way for ICM agents to get involved in supporting MPTF and to raise their awareness and interest in becoming involved with the Fund.

The ICM Barbeque provided the opportunity for many agents to see first-hand the charitable work of the Fund, many of which have developed a deep appreciation for the work that is being done. The contributions of industry members such as Ed have helped to raise awareness in the industry and continue to create memorable experiences for MPTF residents.

The 32nd Annual Heartbeat of Hollywood Golf Classic

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

In 1978, the Motion Picture & Television Fund hosted the first ever Heartbeat of Hollywood Golf Classic. Now, 32 years later, this event remains strong, with more than 450 MPTF supporters and guests participating in the day’s festivities. These festivities include a wonderful dinner reception, entertainment, awards, an auction, and a raffle, which includes prizes like flat screen TVs, iPods, and digital cameras.

2010 Heartbeat of Hollywood

32nd Annual Heartbeat of Hollywood Golf Classic

Heartbeat of Hollywood, which you may have read about in one of our recent posts, took place this year on Monday, June 7th, and was held at three different golf courses; Calabasas Golf & Country Club, El Caballero Country Club and Saticoy Golf & Country Club. The tournament kicked off with a Shot Gun Tee-Off, a format in which all groups of players tee off simultaneously from different holes. With a very positive surrounding atmosphere, one knew they were in great company by just simply walking around the event.

Over the years, the Heartbeat of Hollywood Golf Classic has raised nearly $5 million. This year, the event continues to add to that number, thanks to all of our incredibly generous participants. Throughout its history, a portion of the money raised has helped in purchasing medical equipment for the seven health centers MPTF has around Los Angeles as well as the residential community in Woodland Hills. Other proceeds from this event, however, go towards supporting MPTF’s various programs that serve those entertainment industry members in need. Services include financial assistance, health insurance premium support, and counseling, as well as many other charitable forms of aid.

MPTF would like to give a big thanks to Nigro, Karlin, Segal & Feldstein, LLP, the presenting sponsor for this 32nd Annual Heartbeat of Hollywood Golf Classic, as well as all of our other sponsors. None of this would be possible without your generous donations.

He Came, He Saw, He Researched, He Volunteered

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

I ran into Kevin Dobson at a fundraising event for the Motion Picture & Television Fund. It was at a trendy hotel on Sunset and was for the enlightened of Hollywood public relations people regarding the Fund’s current situation and its future.

Kevin was invited to the hotel by those opposed to the necessary closing of the MPTF Hospital and Long Term Care Unit.

Kevin and I discussed both sides of the situation. I shared my thoughts and invited him to come out to the Woodland Hills campus and take a look around, and learn more about the reasons surrounding the decision to make such difficult changes in the Fund to ensure its long-term survival to serve our industry.

Kevin came out, chatted with residents, and met with Ken Scherer, CEO of the Foundation, and Jennifer Clymer who manages the on-campus television station, Channel 22.

No one twisted his arm or sold him a bill of goods. Kevin did his own research. The result was Kevin has volunteered not only to support the Motion Picture & Television Fund, but also to volunteer to create, produce and even appear in productions for Channel 22. It’s a great reminder that sometimes that the best “public relations” is a private conversation!

A few words from Kevin:

I decided to be an actor after I served my country in the US Army as Military Policeman.

Acting has provided me with an insight, not only in my life, but the human condition of others and how life is portrayed. It’s been rewarding to say the least, although I was not aware of nor prepared for the resulting responsibility that goes along with the exposure of television, movies,
stage, radio, the internet, etc. One of the priorities was to “help” a charity. I thought, why me? Well, considering this type of media recognition and what it might mean to fundraising, I decided okay, why not me? I’ve been associated with many volunteer efforts across the board but not in my own industry. That’s changed for good. You can find me volunteering for the Motion Picture & Television Fund simply because the craft service people, prop people, DP people, AD people, writer people, actor people, directors, make-up, hair, 399, etc., live there and I’m thankful for their help.

See ya there.

You can see why Kevin and I have been friends for years.   He’s a great guy.   Check back in a few days and I’ll have more about the project he’s cooking up for MPTF’s on-campus TV station, Channel 22. (more…)
