Palliative Care – Decisions That Matter

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

You can’t get to be my age without losing a few people along the way. It may be family or it may be friend but time catches up with all of us sooner or later. And it’s made me think about how important it is for someone to be able to make choices about the way their medical condition is treated as days grow shorter. The Motion Picture & Television Fund provides what’s known as “Palliative Care” that specializes in relieving suffering as it strives to provide the best quality of life for patients with advanced illness.
Palliative Care doesn’t replace existing medical treatments, it supports the patient and their families during this very emotional and stressful time.

Susan Poprock, MPTF Chief Nurse Executive who heads the Palliative Care team pointed out that illness and pain can be very isolating and often, “the patients and their families really need the team just to listen and understand what they¹re going through. We try to address both the illness and the isolation.”

Probably the best thing about MPTF Palliative Care is that it’s personal and individualized. Your Palliative Care team will give you clear and honest answers so they and your family can all work together to manage treatment, side effects, and daily activities. They’ll share information with each other and with you so no one is every left wondering, “what if?”

Call them. They can help.

Computer Skills Keep Residents Connected

Friday, March 26th, 2010

Most of the people over sixty that I know who don’t know how to use a computer are frightened to even try to learn.
They feel they’ve lived this long, why bother and complicate their lives with new technology. What a loss of mental invigoration, connection to life and the world and creative endeavors!

mptf resident computer class

Not here on the Motion Picture & Television Fund Campus.

I audited Priscilla Anchondo’s computer class at the Country House last week and was inspired by several of Priscilla’s students who were not only learning how to use a computer but working on projects that will be near and dear to them and their family and friends: they are writing their autobiographies. I won’t tell you how old Nancy is – she admits to thirty nine – but Milt is eighty three and Marvin, eighty two, and it wasn’t the fear of the computer that I saw on their faces, it was the joy of creation.

Priscilla has worked with over two hundred people throughout the eight years she’s taught the computer class here on the MPTF campus, and is still as fresh, energetic and giving to her students as she was at the inception of the class. Even Priscilla had to learn how to use Facebook and is now teaching that new phenomenon in class. Email is the most magical of knowledge she can impart. She’s connected our residents to family and friends all over the US and the world by sharing the knowledge and ability to use email.

The mouse movements were sometimes hesitant but the keyboard clicks were definitive and positive while I was there.

Residents are welcome to come with questions and ideas regarding how they would like to use a computer to create and stay connected!

Maggie Gyllenhaal, MPTF and I

maggie gylenhaal and joe sutton

I have never gotten over getting nervous and anxious before an interview, any interview. When I know it’s going to be conducted before our own MPTF residents, for our Channel 22 and my Heart of Hollywood Radio/Podcast program, and that a gorgeous, talented and Academy Award nominated actress, Maggie Gyllenhaal, is our guest, the levels of nervousness are pretty intense.

There are so many things to juggle: Maggie has to be made comfortable and at home; our residents have to be kept interested and entertained; I have to do my best to get Maggie to discuss things that other interviewers haven’t gotten to and are unique for our conversation.

maggie gylenhaal and ruthie tompson

There was no need to worry. Maggie was great and more than professionally informative. We discovered a thing or two about her performance in Crazy Heart that even her co-star, Jeff Bridges wasn’t aware of and won’t be till he views our chat. (You can hear what she had to say at 11:00am on Saturday, February 27 on KGIL-AM radio 1260; www.1260.am)

The residents treated Maggie as what she is – a family member of our wonderful entertainment industry charity. The Q & A session at the end of our interview/conversation was as warm and friendly as a family getting together at Thanksgiving. Pictures were taken, stories exchanged and best of all, our Ruthie Tompson (pictured above) got to get the spotlight shined on her a little bit when everyone was informed of the wonderful Vanity Fair article in the current Hollywood Issue about Ruth and her gal pal Disney co-workers.

On the Freeway going home, I felt totally exhausted but happy and fulfilled. Even our lovely Connie Sawyer gave me the thumbs up after the interview and we all know what a tough and honest critic she can be.

I slept well that night.

MPTF Residents on George Lopez Show!

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

Several residents from MPTF were guests of George Lopez at the taping of his show “Lopez Tonight” which aired February 10th. It was his special Valentine’s Day show and not only did the ladies get front row seats for the show, but they each got a kiss from George. And if that wasn’t enough, guest Ashton Kutcher saw the MPTF lovelies on his way on stage and just had to stop and wish them a happy Valentine’s Day and give out a few kisses of his own.

During the show, George played a segment he had taped days earlier at MPTF where he interviewed female residents about love, romance and what they want from a man. The show ended with MPTF resident Lee Zenziplr giving a toast to George, saying that “you’re never too old or young to fall in love on Valentine’s Day.”

It was a special day for the MPTF residents who got to go to the show, and the producers really rolled out the red carpet and treated them like celebrities. And “Lopez Tonight” viewers across the country got to see some of the wonderful ladies and gentlemen of the MPTF Country House on late night television!

Channel 22: A miracle right here on the MPTF Campus

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

kevin dobson and channel 22 volunteer

Thanks to the vision and generosity of Mel Shavelson and financial support from entertainment industry companies like NBC Universal, the MPTF was able to create a closed-circuit television station for the residents here on campus.

Every week we are creating original programming that is written and produced by an amazing combination of residents, employees, and volunteers of all ages. Jennifer Clymer, Channel 22’s executive producer is the miracle woman who makes it all happen. Her partner in miracles is associate producer Marie Tang, who provides unfailing support to help keep our small but vital station on the air.
Both have been joined by an incredible team of volunteers.

channel 22 camera volunteers

Our volunteers run the gamut from retired pros to high school kids. Every day, this cross-section of generations comes together to create something unique for our residents. Veteran editors teach film school students how to tell a story visually; students show vets the new dimensions of technology. Younger camera people can get real-life experience working at the station; writers can try their hand at a new form. A retired pro like make up man Del Acevedo not only makes everyone on camera at Channel 22 feel beautiful, he shares the tricks of his trade with newer members of the industry.

We thank Merrill Barr, Bill Cappelman, Dominic DiMascio, Kevin Dobson, Sean Dobson, Bernie Fisher, Sandra Greenspoon, Sigi Hart, Vera Hart, Frank Kratovil, Ellen Levine, Marganit Lish, Skip Lusk, Virgil Mirano, Charlie Romano, Bobby White, Amy Wieseneck, Deppie Wieseneck, and Charlie Ziarko, as well as our junior volunteers Daniel, Jen, Joanne, Kenny, Lex, Lexie, and Max.

Where would the world be without those who volunteer to help others, no matter what the needs? How fortunate are we here at MPTF to have the volunteers necessary to keep our so unique Channel 22 on the air. Thank you all, the angels of Channel 22 and we invite everyone reading this to consider joining our wonderful team of Channel 22 Volunteers.

One for all and all for one, that’s us, the Miracle of Channel 22, and you ain’t seen nothin’ yet.

– Joe Sutton
